Our work in Belgium

Raising awareness – Taking action – Transforming

Our work in Belgium aims to raise awareness, mobilise people and advocate for sustainable food systems. Humundi (formerly SOS Faim) is an international NGO working towards sustainable food systems. In Belgium, our work aims to raise awareness, challenge the status quo and mobilise citizens, policy-makers and all key stakeholders to help establish a political and societal framework that supports sustainable food systems. Through our events, campaigns, educational resources and publications, we work every day to foster a fairer world for farmers and food consumers, both here and around the globe.

Our approach

Education for Global and Solidarity-Based Citizenship

Humundi’s work is fully rooted in an approach to education for global and solidarity-based citizenship (ECMS). We invite Belgian citizens to unpack the complexity of global food systems, to understand the interdependencies between social, economic, environmental and political issues, and to foster international solidarity.

In the face of contemporary multiple crises (climate, biodiversity, inequality), ECMS enables us to develop a critical understanding of systemic causes, particularly in high-income countries. Our actions empower individuals and communities to take action through events, workshops, training courses, publications and political advocacy campaigns.

Lifelong learning

Humundi has been recognised as a lifelong learning organisation since 2023. Our approach promotes the individual and collective empowerment of citizens of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation through the critical analysis of global food systems and the exercise of the right to food.

We run an annual programme of activities across the whole of French-speaking Belgium, including numerous editions of the AlimenTERRE festival in Brussels and throughout Wallonia. We also produce analyses and educational resources to support organisations and the general public in their commitment to these issues.

Festival Alimenterre Belgique 2026 : soirée d'ouverture avec la Troupe Arsenic2

The AlimenTERRE Festival

Every year in Belgium and internationally, Humundi organises the AlimenTERRE Festival, a festival of socially conscious films that invites us to rethink global food systems. In collaboration with a wide network of local partners, the festival offers screenings, debates and activities, attended by specialists from the agricultural sector, film-makers and leaders of practical initiatives.

The festival aims to raise awareness of food and agricultural challenges, to inspire through practical solutions, and to mobilise citizens to take action for change. Since 2016, it has been held in our partner countries: the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Kinshasa and the provinces, 1,800 festival-goers in 2025), Burkina Faso (Ouagadougou and Koupéla, 1,500 festival-goers), Senegal (Dakar and the provinces, 2,170 festival-goers) and the Central African Republic (Bangui).

JAGROS and the DJESA project

Our JAGROS awareness-raising day aims to stimulate debate on food sovereignty within university curricula. Lectures, workshops and forums enable students to reflect on the major current challenges facing agriculture and food, in both the North and the South.

The DJESA project, born out of a partnership with Uni4Coop and Vétérinaires Sans Frontières, is aimed at first-year students of bioengineering, medicine and political science, through a lecture or a play followed by themed workshops.

Humundi Race

Humundi Race is an adventure combining walking, trail running, kayaking and a ‘death ride’ in Bouillon. By forming a team of 3 to 6 people, you’ll push your limits whilst supporting Humundi’s projects to combat hunger and promote fairer food systems. Your donors will receive a tax receipt for any donation of 40 euros or more.

Our campaigns

We are doing everything we can to make sustainable food systems a priority in public policy. We support our international partners in their advocacy work and strive to reform agricultural and food laws at both the Belgian and European levels, with an impact that extends to countries in the Global South as well. Our campaigns raise awareness of our key issues: the true cost of our food, the export of banned pesticides – which led to the adoption of a Belgian Royal Decree – and our campaign against a multinational corporation.

2024

On 9 june, put a stop to agriculture heading for disaster!

Political decisions have a direct impact on the food we eat and on farmers, both at home and abroad. This campaign was carried out in Belgium, to inform the voting choices of citizens in the Belgian and European elections in 2024.

The true price of our food

The price you pay at the checkout is just the tip of the iceberg. The hidden costs of what we eat amount to billions of dollars, and you’re already footing the bill without knowing it!

Let’s not export our problems

For several years now, the European dairy sector has been suffering from overproduction. This has led to a fall in prices, making it impossible for European dairy farmers to make a living from their work.

Support our work in Belgium

Your support enables Humundi to carry out its awareness-raising, advocacy and citizen mobilisation work in Belgium and in our partner countries. There are several ways you can contribute.

Making a one-off or monthly donation, either online or by bank transfer, directly supports our projects in the long term. For donations of 40 euros or more per year, a tax receipt will be issued automatically.
